How to brush your dog at home
Use a brush suited to your dog’s coat type:
• Slicker brush: great for most long-haired or curly-coated dogs
• Bristle brush: best for short-haired breeds
• Comb or dematter: helpful for working through knots and tangles
Make sure your dog is relaxed. Start when they’re tired or after a walk.
Work in small areas, starting from the back of the neck and moving down the body. Always brush in the direction the hair grows.
Don’t press too hard — you want to brush the coat, not the skin. Be extra gentle around sensitive areas like the belly, legs, and tail.
If you find tangles, gently separate them with your fingers first, then use a dematting comb or slicker brush. Never pull or cut mats close to the skin — that’s best left to a professional groomer.
Behind the ears, under the legs, the chest, and around the tail are common places for mats to form.
Praise and give treats during and after brushing to keep the experience positive.
